Adult Literacy ABE | GED®
The dream of earning your Maryland high school diploma is within reach!
Our supportive teachers and volunteers meet you right where you are and work with you to achieve your goals—all at a pace that you choose.
Once you see what you can accomplish, the world is open to you. Adult Literacy classes will increase both your employability and your self-confidence. The program provides a supportive environment that allows you to brush up on basic learning skills and prepare to take the GED® exam.
Before You Begin
Adults must be 18 or older and officially withdrawn from school to enroll in ABE | GED® classes. Classes are held face-to-face at various sites throughout Harford County as well as virtually. Participating ABE | GED students will have mandatory attendance and online learning requirements. All students must attend one of our FREE pre-orientation sessions. During this session students will:
- Receive information about reading, writing, math, and program expectations.
- Receive information about GED® preparation classes.
- Schedule a reading and math assessment.
- Speak privately with an advisor about your academic skills, educational, and career goals.
- Sign up for classes.
- Learn about face-to-face or virtual options.
SUMMER Semester runs JULY 24 - SEPTEMBER 27; you must attend one of the following ABE-GED® Pre-Orientation Sessions.

After attending a pre-orientation session, students are required to attend an advising session for intake and assessment, a classroom etiquette workshop, and MS TEAMS classroom training.

Set Yourself Up for Success!
TOOLS for SUCCESS: Workshop to Improve Your Success in Education
This workshop is great for those who need to brush-up on or learn basic study skills.
Instructors work with students to set Specific, Measurable, Action, Relevant, Time-bound
(SMART) goals, establish action plans, and develop note-taking and study skills and
study strategies that set you up for success in other classes. The class meets 90
minutes per week for four weeks.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) Classes
These classes are FREE and meet mornings or evenings two times a week for nine weeks and provide both individual and group instruction. The class covers:
- Reading skills for the beginning reader
- Basic math skills
- Skills for everyday living
PreGED® Classes
These classes are FREE and meet mornings or evenings four times a week for nine weeks. The class covers intermediate math, science, social studies, reading, and writing skills. Students must have qualifying scores on assessments and are required to purchase books and class materials.
GED® Test Preparation Classes
Harford Community College's GED® Test Prep classes review skills required to to sit for the GED® exam and take your education to the next level by earning a Maryland high school diploma. Classes meet once a week for nine weeks and are offered in the mornings or evenings. Classes cover:
- Advanced math, science, social studies, reading, and writing skills
- Computer and test-taking skills
Students must have qualifying scores on assessments. Tuition, fees, and books for the GED® Preparation classes are the responsibility of the student. Scholarships, senior adult and disabled retiree tuition waivers are available, and the classes are eligible for VA benefits.
Testing for the GED®
Once you complete the GED® Test Preparation classes, you can schedule a time to sit for the computerized GED® exam at Harford Community College's Pearson Vue Test Center, located in Edgewood Hall.
