Child Care

If you are patient, kind, and love interacting with children as they explore the world and discover how they fit into it, an exciting and rewarding career in child care may be a good fit for you.

Those in this field are teachers and caregivers and thrive on helping to shape the minds of the littlest students.

Harford Community College offers a variety of courses that meet licensing requirements as per the Office of Child Care (OCC).  Multiple credentials are available, including the 90-hour certificate program which meets OCC requirements for lead teachers in the State of Maryland.

Harford Community College also offers an 18-month Child Care Apprenticeship program. It is an "earn while you learn" program designed to be completed while working full-time in licensed Maryland child care facility.

What can I do when I complete this program?

Students completing this program may be employed as teachers, aides, or administrators in child care programs.

Potential Careers

According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the child care industry is anticipated to grow by about 2% between 2018 and 2028. While the child care workers in 2020 was $25,460 a year, the median pay for child care directors was $49,160.*
