The seasonal Gardens & Grounds Tour explores Monticello’s restored gardens and discusses Jefferson’s lifelong interest in botany as well as the enslaved gardeners who maintained the landscape. The Slavery at Monticello Tour focuses on the experiences of the enslaved people who lived and labored at Mulberry Row, the industrial hub and “Main Street” of the 5,000-acre plantation. In 1801, French immigrant E. I. du Pont purchased a plot of land along the Brandywine and in 1802 established a gun powder mill on the site. Eventually E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. was the leading supplier of gunpowder to the United States Government. Tour the Hagley black powder yard, the family home and gardens plus learn about the inventions and patents held by this innovator. His descendants, the du Pont family, have been one of the richest and most prominent American families since the 19th century, with generations of influential businessmen, politicians and philanthropists. Created in collaboration with Neil Diamond himself, A Beautiful Noise is the uplifting true story of how a kid from Brooklyn became a chart-busting, show-stopping American rock icon. Family owned and operated since 1991, this Little Italy restaurant is known for their fresh seafood and pasta. A limited menu has been developed, and our reservation is located on the second floor of the restaurant. Fee includes round-trip transportation on a motor coach bus, and orchestra theater seat, and dinner.

Difficulty:

Leisurely day. You can board a bus, climb one flight of stairs, walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. 

Slightly challenging. Likely walking two to three miles over the course of the day, on a variety of terrains with rest breaks. 

On the go. You can handle standing for long periods of time, are able to walk about 6,000 steps during the trip and are comfortable climbing into/out of various modes of transportation.

Physically active. During this trip, you will likely walk 8,000–10,000 steps. You must be comfortable with long periods of standing or walking on uneven terrain and steep slopes.
