Summer Art Exhibit at Chesapeake Gallery

16 June 2022

“Brent Crothers: Searching for a History
June 16-September 7, 2022
Opening Reception: Sunday, June 26 | 2-4 PM
Chesapeake Gallery, Student Center

Harford Community College’s summer art exhibit, Searching for a History, honors the creative process of Harford County sculptor and Harford alumnus Brent Crothers, who passed away in 2020. His relationships to the materials he collected, his use of unappreciated materials, and environmental advocacy were as important as the work he made. In transforming the context of recognizable objects, Brent posed questions about the environment and the choices we make, particularly as consumers.

Brent began his study of art at Harford, and went on to earn a BFA and MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. He exhibited extensively and received national grants and awards for his sculptures.

The Brent Crothers Creativity Enhancement Grant was established at Harford in 2020. This annual award supports artistic experimentation, a new project, or materials toward a project. Three Harford students have been recipients to date. A percentage of any works sold during the exhibition will be contributed to this grant. Please consider a donation; visit go.harford.edu/foundation.

During the time the Chesapeake Gallery is exhibiting Brent's work, other works of his will also be displayed around Harford’s campus, as will the work of two of the student recipients of his namesake grant. These outdoor installations can be found in the following locations:

Walkway to Joppa Hall near Parking Lot A: Water Wars #3

Joppa Hall, outside of the Drawing and Painting Studio or in the SAGA Gallery: Exhibition of work created by Lindsey Hall and John Harris, the two “Brent Crothers Creative Enhancement Grant” recipients.

Joppa Hall Sculpture Garden: Temporary installation of three of Brent’s large Egg Forms

The Closing Reception is scheduled for Tuesday, September 6, 4-6:30 p.m. in the Chesapeake Gallery in the Student Center.

Please contact Chesapeake Gallery Coordinator Brad Blair with any questions at 443.412.2461 or bblair@harford.edu.
