Actors Guild in The Diviners at Harford Community College

27 October 2021

The Actors Guild, a student organization that sponsors theater productions for Harford Community College students, will perform The Diviners on November 11-14 in the Chesapeake Theater on campus.

The play is set in in a small southern Indiana town during the early days of the Depression. It centers on the relationship of Buddy Layman, a mentally-challenged boy with a sweet nature, and C.C. Showers, a former preacher. Showers travels through town looking for work and is offered a job as a mechanic at Buddy’s father’s garage. He and Buddy develop a special bond, and Showers becomes the boy’s mentor and teacher.

When Buddy was young, he almost drowned. This trauma, and the loss of his mother in the same accident, has left the boy deathly afraid of water. It has also left Buddy with a special gift to divine water for wells and predict rain. The town doesn’t have a preacher and some of the women in town try to persuade Showers to preach – while he tries to persuade the child to wash. When the former preacher finally gets the boy in the river and is washing him, the townspeople mistake the scene for a baptism and tragedy strikes.

Tickets for youth, students, and seniors are $8 and tickets for adults are $12.  To purchase tickets, visit https://harford.universitytickets.com/.
