About

Sonia is an associate professor of medical-surgical nursing at Harford Community College where she works with her students to improve patient outcomes through excellent care. A former community college student, she understands the important role of HCC in helping aspiring nurses to achieve their dreams. Health literacy, intercultural communication, and social justice are of particular interest to her; she hopes to inspire her students to population health awareness and quality patient education.

Research Interests

Sonia’s research interests center on health literacy and communication education; specifically, in the undergraduate nursing setting. Helping nursing students understand health literacy and social determinants of health and creating faculty toolkits to more easily integrate these important subjects into their educational practice are primary areas of interest.
