Harford Community College to Host Constitution Day Events

The celebration of Constitution Day on Thursday, September 17, continues the spirit and theme of America 250. The following activities are planned and the public is invited. All events take place from 11 AM to 1 PM on the 2nd floor of the Harford Community College Library patio and Library lobby.

Revolutionary Stitches is back. Learn new skills such as crocheting, weaving, embroidery, and knitting, and other skills women routinely employed before, during and after the Revolutionary War. There is no cost to attend the event.

Volunteer to virtually transcribe original historical documents to improve discovery in the Library of Congress' By The People database: https://crowd.loc.gov/. Harford will have laptops on the Library patio as part of the activities, where Library staff will show and demo how anyone can help volunteer to transcribe original historical documents at the Library of Congress' By The People website. Any effort helps create more metadata for these original scanned documents in their database to help the documents be more searchable and discoverable in their database. There will be information and QR codes to the site, so that anyone can use their own devices (phone or laptop) to go to the site on their own.

In addition, there will be displays as well as free giveaways and cookies while they last inside the Library on the 2nd floor.

During the event, you can also enjoy red, white, and blue snow cones (while they last) from the Office of Student Life; visit with a Founding Father and get a free pocket Constitution; and sign your name to the U.S. Constitution.

While on campus, you can view the Revolution-themed exhibit inside the Hays-Heighe House. Can’t make it on September 17? There’s still time as the exhibit runs through December 2026; the Hays-Heighe House is open Tuesdays, 1-3 PM; Thursdays, 3-5 PM; and Fridays, 10 AM-12 PM.

Constitution Day is a celebration of the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by 39 of the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787. The date is also designated Citizenship Day to focus on the rights and responsibilities of citizens under the Constitution. Constitution Day at Harford strives to educate the campus community about the Constitution and citizenship, both historically and as they apply to today's challenges.
