Harford Community College Library and the Hays-Heighe House to Host "Revolutionary Stitches"
02 September 2025
In conjunction with Constitution Day 2025, Harford Community College Library and the
Hays-Heighe House will host Revolutionary Stitches on Wednesday, September 17 from 11 AM to 1 PM on the College Library patio. The public
is invited to this free event.
Revolutionary Stitches is a "make and take" event for the Harford County community to educate participants about handcrafting (making items skillfully by hand) during the Colonial Period. Learn about drop-spindles, weaving, embroidery, crochet, and more.
This event is one of several planned as part of the Hays-Heighe House's yearlong exhibit, Homespun: Textiles & Revolution. The exhibit will be on display from September 30, 2025, to July 31, 2026. A talk, Textiles and Slavery in the Mid-Atlantic, will take place on the exhibit’s opening day, September 30, from 12:30 to 1:30 PM. Learn about the fabric-making work of enslaved men, women, and children. From planting and harvesting to spinning, weaving, sewing, and mending, daily life at the Hays-Heighe House in the 19th century depended on the forced labor of those the Hays family enslaved—work that sustained the household, the fields, and likely the factory as well.
The Hays-Heighe House, located on the Harford Community College campus, is open Tuesdays, 1-3 PM; Thursdays, 3-5 PM; and Fridays, 10 AM-12 PM.
