Harford Institute for Scholarly Teaching

11 June 2025

Harford Institute for Scholarly TeachingHarford Community College’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CETL) held the Harford Institute for Scholarly Teaching June 3 to 6 on campus for full-time and part-time faculty. Several faculty members from the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) who are partners in a cooperative project on shared professional development between the two faculties also attended. Twenty-five faculty took part in the Institute, held for the second time this year, and gained valuable tools, strategies, and connections to help them transform approaches to student learning.

The Harford Institute for Scholarly Teaching was designed to expand and sharpen teaching skills through an immersive, minds-on, hands-on experience to learn and practice evidence-based teaching strategies such as inclusive teaching, active learning, and backward design. Sessions included interactive workshops on evidence-based teaching practices, collaboration with colleagues to develop teaching modules, and the presentation of teaching modules to faculty participants for feedback and review. The Institute was designed to jumpstart teaching and learning plans for the upcoming semester.

The four-day Institute was modeled after the Mobile Summer Institutes (MoSIs) that have served as a transformative event in the careers of many higher education faculty from R1 institutions (known for their extensive research programs, significant research funding, and numerous research publications) to community colleges.

The Harford Institute for Scholarly Teaching was led by Breonna Martin, Associate Professor of Biology, and Faith Andrews, Associate Professor of Nursing, both from Harford Community College.
