New Exhibit: Anchoring Points: Installations by Liz Miller to Open in Chesapeake Gallery

The Chesapeake Gallery at Harford Community College will host a new exhibit titled Anchoring Points: Installations by Liz Miller from November 17 to January 5.The Chesapeake Gallery at Harford Community College will host a new exhibit titled Anchoring Points: Installations by Liz Miller from November 17 to January 5. The artist explores the Black experience in America and centers her efforts on the transformation of tragedy into a celebration of Black life. All are invited to the opening reception with an artist talk to be held November 18 from 5 to 6:30 PM in the Chesapeake Gallery in the College’s Student Center.

Liz Miller is a second-generation fine artist who creates hair sculptures, sculptural paintings, wearable art, performance art pieces, and film. Her films capture community members and her performing while adorned with hair sculptures for meaningful transformative movement rituals. The concepts embodied in her work are social justice themes centered around the Black experience in America, utilizing both history and Afro-futurism simultaneously balanced within. She considers her work to be a part of a broader Black liberation strategy employing Black joy and serious play. Her work has been exhibited at various noteworthy institutions including the Delaware Contemporary Museum and the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco, CA, and internationally throughout Canada, Japan, Indonesia, South Korea, England, Liberia (West Africa), and India. She earned a BA in Art and Design from Towson University and an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has been a teaching artist for the last 20 years and currently is an art teacher for a Title 1 school in Baltimore. She has also been a guest lecturer at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Johns Hopkins University, and Loyola University Maryland.

The Chesapeake Gallery is located on the second floor of the Student Center on Harford Community College’s campus at 401 Thomas Run Road in Bel Air. Parking is free and handicap parking is available close to the gallery. Gallery hours are Mondays and Thursdays, 8:30 AM - 7 PM; Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:30 AM - 5 PM; and Fridays, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. The gallery is closed on weekends and major holidays. 

The College’s Chesapeake Gallery features contemporary art by emerging and established artists, as well as Harford’s faculty, staff, and students.
