13 July 2023

Aubrey Zinn Named Adjunct of the Year by Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Harford Community College

Adjunct instructor Aubrey Zinn, who teaches in the Arts & Humanities division at Harford Community College, was recently named the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning’s (CETL) Adjunct of the Year. Jordan McKeon, an adjunct instructor in the Behavioral and Social Sciences division, and Tammy Webber, an adjunct instructor in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematic (STEM) division, were also nominated for the award. They all received a monetary reward funded by CETL, along with a certificate.

Zinn, who has been a teaching for 25 years, has been an adjunct member of the English department at Harford for 16 years. She has also worked in Maryland high schools and as a private tutor. At the College, she primarily teaches gateway courses such as English Composition, helping students acclimate to college life and working hard to retain them. Other classes she has taught include English Composition and Literature, Business Communications, and transitional studies courses in which students acquire the skills needed to succeed in credit-bearing classes. Zinn has taught courses in several modalities including face-to-face, asynchronous online, via Teams, and hybrid. Her years of experience have provided opportunities to learn what works and what doesn't work. Her classes are highly interactive, and she goes out of her way to help students who are struggling.

She contributes to the College beyond her teaching responsibilities by participating in the Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum Workgroup and has stepped in to fill positions when needed at the last minute. As an emergency full-time hire for the department in one such position, she served on committees, helped shape the curriculum, engaged in all departmental matters, and developed student feedback forms that she shared with others in the department. Zinn is highly respected by her colleagues and her students.

Jordan McKeon has been teaching physical education courses an adjunct for Harford Community College for 10 years. She is a very effective instructor, and her students speak highly of her on their course evaluations. She ensures that her students feel welcomed, included, and accepted. McKeon, who teaches both online and face-to-face PE courses, has developed innovative methods of instruction. She was a pivotal contributor to adapting face-to-face physical education classes to the College’s online platform by creating and implementing several strategies to help document student completion of exercise programs. Although not required of adjuncts, she participates in professional development every year and effectively applies the information to her teaching.

Tammy Webber has served as adjunct faculty at Harford for 11 years. She has taught transitional math courses as well as College Algebra and Contemporary Mathematics. She has been a mentor to students in many areas of growth – not necessarily only in Math subjects – and a premier role model for other adjuncts. Webber effectively manages her classes, the pace of the lessons, and the give-and-take interface with her students. She is exceptional in front of students in the classroom and across all categories of content knowledge, preparation, presentation, and assessment. Her enthusiasm is demonstrated in the rapport she establishes with her students, and the encouragement she provides. Tammy has been an adjunct member of Harford’s General Education Committee for the past few years and provided significant assistance in the development of the General Education Development (GED) Mathematics curricula for the College.
