Harford Community College Announces The Success Journey Scholarship Award and Recipient

22 July 2022

Harford Community College has announced the establishment of The Success Journey Scholarship.

The new scholarship, with an annual award of $2,000, is given to a Harford Community College student(s) who is enrolled full time with 12+ credits, has a 2.50+ cumulative GPA, resides in Harford County, has recently graduated from a Harford County Public High School, and has demonstrated financial need.

Dakota Smith, who graduated in June from Joppatowne High School, is the first recipient of The Success Journey Scholarship. Joppatowne High School Counselor Nicole Venters said, “As soon as I learned of The Success Journey Scholarship opportunity, I immediately thought of Dakota and that he must apply. Dakota meets every requirement of the scholarship criteria and is a student focused on his educational journey.” Dakota will attend Harford in the fall and study business with an educational goal of becoming a CPA.

Success Journey founders/partners Marlon Madden and Ricky Venters met with Dakota and his mother recently at Harford. They communicated that their goal is beyond the financial assistance the scholarship offers. They would like to serve as mentors to Dakota in all facets of his life as he moves forward in his educational journey.

“Oftentimes the final obstacle Harford’s students must overcome when seeking a higher education is a financial one,” Denise Dregier, Executive Director for the Harford Community College Foundation, said. “We are so appreciative of generous donors like Marlon and Ricky who establish a scholarship. To have them also offer their time as mentors to one of our students is beyond generous.”

Harford Community College offers more than 90 affordable degree and certificate programs of study as well as a variety of noncredit community education and workforce development courses. Located on 352 acres near Bel Air, Harford Community College has been helping Harford Countians achieve their goals since 1957.

The College’s fall semester begins August 22, 2022. Contact Admissions to get started on your higher education dream at admissions@harford.edu.
