Applied Engineering Technician

According to CareerOneStop, a website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, employment of engineering technicians and technologists is expected to increase 6% through 2022, with a median wage in Maryland of $82,000!

Opportunities for engineering technians will be best for individuals with an associate's degree or extensive job training in engineering technology. A wide variety of job opportuniites exist in manufacturing, electronics, production and processing, operations, and research and development.

Some specific tasks performed by an Engineering Technician:

  • Assist engineers and scientists in conducting applied research in electrical engineering.
  • Design or modify engineering schematics for electrical transmission and distribution systems or for electrical installation in residential, commercial, or industrial buildings, using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Diagnose, test, or analyze the performance of electrical components, assemblies,or systems.
  • Install or maintain electrical control systems, industrial automation systems, or electrical equipment, including control circuits, variable speed drives, or programmable logic controllers.
