Alumnus John T. Rusin ’18, Morning Newscast Director for WBFF Fox 45, found Harford Community College to be a great resource for learning about the field of communications.
In May 2017, he joined WBFF Fox 45 as a Production Assistant and was promoted to Morning Newscast Director at the station in June 2019. His responsibilities include preparing the studio for the daily morning newscast and directing some of the 5½-hour morning newscast. John also assists in the production of B’More Lifestyle, Baltimore's premiere lifestyle entertainment show, featuring anything and everything around Baltimore and the surrounding areas, for MyTV Baltimore.
John held several jobs before joining the WBFF team. He interned at WAMD- 970 AM (Aberdeen), worked as a Target team member, served as a volunteer DJ/webmaster at Harford Community Radio WHFC (91.1 FM) and worked as a part-time assistant at WHFC.
His education at Harford provided good preparation for his current job. He received training in television studio operations and control room operations during his years as a student. He credits Gary Helton, Coordinator for WHFC, and Professor Wayne Hepler with helping him tremendously during his years at the College. “It was great to learn from people (Wayne Hepler, Matt Bochniak, Dan Rapazzo, Gary Helton) with years and years of experience in the Communications industry!!,” said John.
“I would absolutely recommend Harford to others; it functions as a great way to gain knowledge in the industry, for far less than the cost at a traditional four-year school.” John added, “The level of experience, within the industry, of the professors, was way beyond what I expected when I first signed up to attend a community college.”
John is an Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 967 out of Havre de Grace. He has played guitar for 20 years, and you can hear him play every Thursday night at Naughty Dogs Restaurant, located on Rt. 22 (next to the College). He also plays guitar for the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church.
His advice to students: “Work hard, even in the classes that are less fun than the ones related to your major.”
John earned an Associate of Applied Sciences degree in Mass Communications: Production and Announcing in Electronic Media from Harford Community College in 2018.
