TUITION ASSISTANCE FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL
Active duty personnel as well as members of the Reserves and the National Guard may be eligible for federal tuition assistance. Currently service members may qualify for annual assistance up to $4,500 with a cap of $750 on individual courses. Members of the Air National Guard do not receive “upfront” federal tuition assistance but may be eligible for reimbursement from the Air Force after completion of their courses. Under normal circumstances your branch of service will only approve tuition assistance for courses on your degree plan that will advance you toward degree completion.
Your tuition assistance form acts as a promissory note from your branch of services and your HCC account is credited for the amount authorized on the form as soon as the form is received. HCC will bill your branch of service for the amount authorized. Be advised, however, that failure to complete a course paid for through the tuition assistance program (either withdrawal or course failure) may result in recoupment action from your branch of service.
Tuition Assistance for Active Duty Army, Army Reserve and
Army National Guard
Service members in the Active Army, Army Reserve and Army
National Guard request tuition assistance through the GoArmyEd system (www.GoArmyEd.com).
As a general rule, soldiers using GoArmyEd DO NOT REGISTER for
classes through normal HCC procedures. Instead registration and tuition
assistance is requested through GoArmyEd. When HCC received a daily download
from GoArmyEd, the College enrolls the student in the requested classes, credits
tuition assistance, and sends a confirming email to the soldier’s official
military email account. If the requested class is not available or is not
appropriate for the student’s degree plan, the College rejects the registration
request and sends an email to that effect to the student’s official military
email account.
The GoArmyEd system only allows soldiers to
register for classes eight weeks or less before the start date of the class.
Soldiers using GoArmyEd may encounter a situation when early registration is
required in order to “hold” a registration for a popular class (e.g., BIO 203,
Anatomy and Physiology I). In this situation, the soldier should register for
the classes using normal HCC procedures and then call the HCC office at Aberdeen
Proving Ground at 410-272-2338. The College will then hold your classes without
payment until you reach the window during which you can request tuition
assistance through GoArmyEd.
For assistance with the GOARMYED system,
please call the HCC Office at Aberdeen Proving Ground at 410-272-2338.
Tuition Assistance for Navy, Marine
Crops, Air Force and Coast Guard
Members of the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force
and Coast Guard should contact the official education office of their branch of
service for instructions for requesting tuition assistance. If unsure who to
contact, check with your unit retention noncommissioned officer who should be
able to direct you to the appropriate office. Once your tuition assistance form
has been approved, take the form to the Cashiers’ Office in the Student Center.
You will be credited for the amount of tuition assistance authorized and you
will be able to see this credit on OWLNET under the All About Me tab.
While services pay for tuition and required laboratory fees, not all pay the HCC
student fee. If this fee is not authorized on your tuition assistance form, you
will be responsible for paying this amount. Questions concerning Navy, Marine,
Air Force and Coast Guard tuition assistance can also be referred to the HCC
Office at Aberdeen Proving Ground at 410-272-2338.
NOTE for all using military tuition
assistance: Service members sometimes experience delays in processing
requests for tuition assistance. If you know that your bill is due before you
expect to receive your tuition assistance authorization, you can call the HCC
office at Aberdeen Proving Ground at 410-272-2338 and request that the College
hold your classes without payment while the form is processed. Because the
college is holding your classes without payment, you will not be dropped for
nonpayment. If you decide you do not want the classes for which you are
registered, it is YOUR responsibility to drop the classes.
