Design And Technical Theatre
Program Description
The Design and Technical Theatre A.A.S. degree offers
students the opportunity to learn, train, and gain the
specialized technical and artistic skills required to execute
contemporary theatrical productions. The Harford Community
College faculty work with each student to create an artistic
point of view within a professional work ethic appropriate
for the theatre.
The major in Design and Technical Theatre is time-consuming
and physically demanding. Participation in productions is a
part of the educational program. All majors must participate
in theatre activities on weekends and during the evening.
Between traveling road shows that perform at The Amoss
Center and College and community productions on the thrust
stage of the Chesapeake Center, students have the opportunity
to work in all forms of theatre such as dramatic plays, musical
theatre, ballet, and mime.
Degree Requirements
In the Harford Community College theatre program, students
enjoy coursework that is more extensive than many four-year programs in theatre,
and excellent preparation for study at very intensive training institutions, such
as Towson University, the University of Maryland Baltimore County, or the
University of Maryland, College Park. In Introduction to Theatre and Modern/World
Drama, students watch, read, and evaluate the great wealth of world dramatic arts.
In basic acting and stagecraft, students develop their craft through live practice
of a variety of performance texts. In theatre production, vocal performance, movement,
scenic design, costuming and play direction, students develop complete performances as
actors, directors, designers and technicians with classroom experiences that prepare them
for careers as working professionals. View the

Student Activities
Harford Community College's Design and Technical Theatre program is committed to connecting students with
professional opportunities during and after their time at Harford Community College.
Students pursue a variety of film, television, radio, live theatre and other
entertainment opportunities in acting, directing, management, design, technical
production and front-of-house. With its close relationship with the Phoenix
Festival Theatre, HCC cultural events and the student production company (the
Actors Guild), students in theatre enjoy the accessibility, opportunities and
close advising of a small 2-year college, right alongside the sort of guest workshops
and professional performances expected of a top theatre program. Recent
opportunities for HCC theatre students have included technical internships/acting
jobs through New York City's Staw Hats, workshops with the Chicago City Limits
improvisational theatre and roles both onstage and offstage with the Harford
Dance Theatre's production of The Nutcracker.
Employment And Transfer Information
Graduates of the performing arts program can find employment opportunities
with performing arts organizations and a variety of businesses
and promoters involved in live theatrical and musical performances. Graduates may transfer to such institutions
as Towson University and University of Maryland campuses in Baltimore County and College Park. Students who
plan to transfer to a four-year institution should check the requirements of that institution. If they are significantly
different from the courses listed, students should consult with an advisor for academic guidance as early into the
