Federal Work Study

Student Employment

The Federal Work Study Program (FWS) provides part-time jobs to students who have financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay for educational expenses.  Students must be enrolled at least part-time (6+ credits) per semester and complete the FAFSA to apply.  Federal Work Study jobs may be on campus, in community service agencies or in the America Reads Program.

In order to be considered for Federal Work-Study, you must meet ALL of the following criteria:

  1. Possess a minimum 2.00 GPA & be in good financial aid standing.
  2. Have completed the FAFSA application for the current aid year AND submitted all requested supporting documentation.
  3. Demonstrate financial need as determined by your FAFSA application.
  4. Be enrolled at least half-time (6 or more credits) each semester.
  5. Criminal Background Screening:  HCC requires that all students employed under the Federal Work Study Program undergo and successfully complete a criminal background screening and sex offender search before beginning employment with HCC.  Additionally, student applicants will be reviewed for Code of Conduct Screening.

New Federal Work Study Students

Students offered a Federal Work Study award will be notified by mail with further instructions.  Each new student employee is required to attend a Group Educational Session with the Federal Work Study Coordinator before they may begin working.

Communication between a new FWS student and a Site-Supervisor may only happen once all federal work study paperwork has been submitted for the new academic school year.

Accepting A FWS Award

Once a student has received their HCC Award Letter, indicating their Federal Work Study offer, they must:

  • Contact the main office to schedule a FWS Group Information Session.  Students are given two (2) weeks to reply to the offer.
  • Complete all Federal Payroll Forms (I-9, W-4, MW 507)
  • Attend a Web Time Entry Session on-campus
  • Interview for a FWS Position

Once a supervisor offers the student a position, the student will receive an official start date notification to begin working.
