Course Description
This course will explore the best practices designed to meet the needs of
infants and toddlers as related to their physical growth and development, mental
health, and human relationships. Attention will be given to the family and
child's multicultural customs, gender equity and children with special needs,
while insuring quality program development and implementation in out-of- home
care environments.
Content will focus on the caregiver, the child, and the program being provided to meet the learning needs of the infant and toddler.

Gonzalez- Mena, Janet and Widmeyer Eyer, Dianne, (2003). Infants, Toddlers and
Caregivers: A Curriculum of Respectful, Responsive Care and Education, 6e,
McGraw-Hill.

Special notes:
Essays
Five 2 page essays are required related to topics within the text. The issues to
be addressed are within the chapter activities. The essays will be graded
accordingly:

| 8 ... | Displays an understanding of the facts, concepts, and generalizations that are specific to the topic. |

| 3 ... | Displays severe misconceptions about the facts, concepts, and generalizations that are specific to the topic. |
| 0 ... | Displays writing which is extremely poor and not representative of the chosen topic. |
NOTE-All written work submitted will be graded for grammar and spelling.
Project
A 6 to 8 page written project will be due at the end of the course.
The topic should be taken from the list below or one which has relevance to you
personally. All topics should be discussed with the instructor at the beginning
of the course.
The project will be worth a total of 50 points. The grade will be determined according to:

Project Options
Field Placement
Each student is required to complete a field placement assignment of 20 hours in
a setting that provides services to Infants and Toddlers (birth to three). This
may be completed within your work setting if applicable, however the age
criteria must be met. Please review placements with the instructor.
