Epithelial Tissue

Simple Columnar Epithelium

This tissue is named because it consists of one layer of column shaped cells.
This tissue is best suited for absorption and secretion and is found in the lining
of the respiratory and digestive tract. This tissue may be ciliated or nonciliated.
The cilia are important in beating to move substance in one direction. The respiratory tract is lines with the ciliated type. The cilia move mucus, debris, foreign cells up to the throat where they are swallowed to be destroyed in the stomach.

The dark purple in the cell is the cell's nucleus. Notice how the nucleus conforms to
the shape of the cell.
