Would you like to have a hands-on career that fills a need for almost everyone? Do you like to solve problems, or figure out puzzles? Does staying active and busy on a variety of different projects sound like your preference? You will enjoy a career in the HVAC/R field if you said yes.

HVAC/R technicians often specialize in either installation, which often involves figuring out puzzles, or maintenance and repair, which is problem solving. Technicians often have many different tasks each day, and due to the growing need, are always busy. Completing this certificate can help you get started in this high demand field.

What This Career Could Mean For You

Employment of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers is projected to increase 15 percent during the 2016-26 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Average hourly wages of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers in Maryland were $27.83 in 2017.

HVACR Certificate at HCC

Students that successfully complete this program should be able to obtain an entry-level position in the HVACR industry. They will also sit for the EPA's Refrigeration Transition and Recovery Certification test. Students that complete this certificate and are interested in applying to the HVAC apprenticeship may qualify to enter the second year, based on passing a skills test. This certificate program takes six to nine months to complete. Courses may be offered as day and/or evening and weekend classes. (Check Schedule of Classes for current term availability.)

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Tenth grade reading level preferred
  • Possess transportation

Required Courses:

  • Basic Refrigeration*
  • Comfort Cooling
  • Electrical for the HVAC Technician
  • Heating Systems
  • Preparation for Refrigerant Recovery Certification

*Basic Refrigeration must be completed first.
