Literacy Education Volunteer Program

Classroom Volunteers

  • Work in Adult Basic Education (ABE) or in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.
  • Classes meet two mornings or evenings a week for 2½ hours per session.
  • Volunteers may choose to serve in one or two class sections per week.
  • No specialized training is necessary, but new volunteers are encouraged to attend an orientation session.

One-on-One Tutors

  • Tutors are required to attend a ten-hour training workshop to become certified to tutor an adult beginning reader in reading and writing skills.
  • Tutoring sessions are scheduled at locations and times convenient for the tutor and student.
  • Tutors and students usually meet once or twice a week for 1 to 2 hours per session.
  • Books and materials for use by the tutors and students are supplied.
