Meet our Early Learning Center Teachers!
Joan earned her Bachelor of Arts from Adelphi University in New York and has her 90 hour certification in Early Childhood Education. Joan Averill has taught the three-year-old program at HCC Early Learning Center since 2003. In addition to her preschool class, she has taught several Mommy and Me programs, including Preschool Explorers, Preschool Art, Preschool Math, and Fingerplays and story-time. Joan has also taught the following camps; Dinosaur Explorers, If Preschoolers Ran the Zoo, and Sugar and Spice Camp. Joan believes that learning should be a fun and exciting adventure. During her class she encourages her students to explore their imaginations through stories, art, music, and movement. She truly loves her job and enjoys seeing the world through the eyes of her beautiful students.
Kristen Butler has a 90-Hour Certificate in Early Childhood Education and has been working in the education field for eight years. She has experience working with children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old. She is full of spunk and energy and is happy to be a part of the HCC Early Learning Center preschool program. Kristen also teaches some of the fun HCC Kids Summer Camps at the Early Learning Center.
Barbara is a retired Harford County Public School teacher where she taught for 40 years. She taught kindergarten for 37 years and spent 3 years teaching first grade. Since retirement, Barb continues to substitute teach in schools and loves having her own class of young 3’s here at HCC. She truly enjoys working with the little ones and watching their growth and progress. Married to husband Bill, Barb lives in rural Darlington. Her daughter Rachel lives nearby. Barb enjoys going to musical events, watching movies and dining out. Barb loves her life. She is especially thankful that she still has contact with her little guys. Barb also teaches some of the fun HCC Kids Summer Camps at the Early Learning Center.
Cheryl is a Harford County resident of 30 years where she has raised three beautiful children. She is a graduate of Mercer College with a degree in architecture. Cheryl loves working with children and enjoys watching them grow, develop, and achieve success. Cheryl is certified in Early Childhood Education and has been a teacher with HCC Kids Preschool for since 2004. She has also taught some of our HCC Kids camps and classes at the HCC Early Learning Center.
Latasha Keyes has a 90-Hour Certificate in Early Childhood Education and over 10 years of experience working with children of all ages. What she enjoys most about teaching is being able to work with children and observe how they develop and grow. Nothing gives her more joy than knowing she has played a vital role in a child’s education. Tasha also teaches Princess Party and Sugar and Spice Camp as part of the HCC Kids summer programs at the Early Learning Center.
Edna Reilly has a 90-Hour Certificate in Early Childhood Education and has been working in the education field for seventeen years. Her prior experience includes preschool instruction for 3- and 4-year-olds. She is very proud to be a part of the HCC Early Learning Center. Edna also teaches Spanish Camp as part of HCC Kids summer camps at the Early Learning Center.
Millie SmithMiller is a former Harford County Public School Family and Consumer Science teacher. Millie loves covering topics that she used to train students in the Child Development program with her 4- and 5-year-old students. This is her first year with the HCC Early Learning Center and her 5th year as a teacher. It makes her day when a current or former student excitedly greets her outside the classroom. She is a life-long Harford County resident.
Jessica Ward has an Early Childhood Education degree from Harford Community College and has been working in the education field for seventeen years. For the past nine years, she has worked with the four- and five-year-old age group. She is a dedicated teacher and enjoys enriching the lives of her students. Jessica also teaches some of the exciting summer camps we offer as part of the HCC Kids summer camps at the Early Learning Center.
