About Certification Tests
Step 1: Get Training
Sign up for preparation courses at Harford Community
College. We teach you the skills you need to successfully
complete the certification test and to perform well in your
job.
Step 2: Apply for Certification Testing
In order to become certified by the American Society of
Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Registry you must meet
academic requirements, experience/training requirements,
and successfully complete a certification examination. Go to
www.ascp.org/bor to ensure you have met the eligibility
requirements and to apply for testing. Fees are payable to
the ASCP. Once approved for testing, the student will be
advised of the nearest Pearson Test Center location to take
the exam.
Step 3: Taking the Test
Histotechnician certification requires successful
completion of two separate examinations - computer and
practical. Applicants must successfully complete the
computer examination before they will be permitted to apply
for the practical examination. The final screen on the
written test indicates whether the student has passed the
written portion of the exam.
Upon receipt of a passing score on the computer
examination, the student will receive information on
applying for the practical examination. The practical test
will involve collecting and processing tissues which will be
sent to the ASCP for evaluation.
Both examinations must be successfully completed within a
five-year period from the date of application of the
computer examination in order for certification to be
granted.
