Mercer and Fonthill Museum
Friday, July 11, 2008
8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Step back in time when entering this 6-story, concrete
castle housing over 40,000 artifacts of early America.
Historian and archaeologist Henry Mercer (1856-1930)
designed and built Mercer Museum to display the artifacts of
daily life in early America before it was swept away by the
Industrial Revolution. Our second stop includes his home,
Fonthill. Mercer built Fonthill both as his home and as a
showplace for his collection of tiles and prints. The
building is an eclectic mix of Medieval, Gothic, and
Byzantine architectural styles, and is significant as an
early example of poured reinforced concrete. Lunch included.
Course fee includes transportation, guided tour of Mercer
Museum, Fonthill Mansion, lunch, and academic escort.
