Harford County Barn/Outbuilding Survey - on-going 2004- PresentBeginning in the fall of 2004, the BPR program in collaboration with Harford County Planning and Zoning, HP division, began an extensive long-term Harford County barn and outbuilding survey. Students participate as volunteers as well as a part of their Research and Documentation course learning the proper way to survey a building. A survey form is completed along with measurements and photographs. The information gathered will benefit homeowners as well as the county's inventory. If you live in and around the Harford county area and you have a barn or outbuilding that you would like to have surveyed, contact Rhonda L. Deeg at rdeeg@harford.edu. A permission form must be completed as well. 2004 Pictures

Prospect Hill Farm Springhouse Restoration - on-going 2005-PresentDuring the spring semester of 2005, the restoration of the Prospect Hill Farm springhouse began. The entire east side of the structures roof was repaired. Slate was carefully removed and saved for future re-installation. The roofs support trusses, soffits and fascia were repaired using Dutchman repairs and replacement of in-kind materials and techniques. The beginning of a long process to re-point the structure using lime mortar also began. In the spring semester of 2007, students re-installed the slate on the east side of the structure and began repair of the roof facing west. The Carpentry and Millwork class also helped in reconstructing the front door and surround that had rotted with repeated years of sitting in flooded waters. The strap hinges and box lock is currently being reconstructed by our Historic Metals class. The springhouse is located on the property of Harford Community College and will be an on-going project until completion. Timber Frame Reconstruction Project at Jerusalem Mill, Kingsville, MD - Summer 2005A collaboration between Friends of Jerusalem Mill, Maryland State Parks, Timber Framers Guild, Preservation Trades Network and the BPR program helped to make the reconstruction of the wheelwright shop at Jerusalem Mill possible. Credit and non-credit students enrolled in this BPR Field Site course had a wonderful opportunity learning from tomber framer Glenn James, Craftwright Inc. for a full 8 days in June. An article written by BPR student John Lindtner tells of his experience and about the long days of chiseling mortise and tenon joints in oak timbers!
