Agriculture Degree

Program Description

Advances in technology continue to change agriculture in Maryland and across the nation. This technology can be used to ignite creative solutions to the challenge of protecting natural resources while managing productive, profitable businesses. Effective management and business skills can be applied to careers in feed or seed sales and service, nutrient management consulting, and crop and livestock production. The business skills emphasized in this program are an important part of success in any career area. Coupled with courses in agricultural mechanics and crop and animal science, students gain skills that are important for managing an effective agricultural enterprise. Internship experiences provide work with industry professionals and interaction with others in agriculture.

Harford Community College cooperates with the Institute of Applied Agriculture, University of Maryland, College Park, to offer this program. Harford Community College offers the general education courses to prepare students for transfer to the Institute of Applied Agriculture. The Institute of Applied Agriculture offers the subject-specific courses required to obtain a degree in agriculture. Harford Community College awards the Associate of Applied Sciences degree upon successful completion of the program.

Business Management Track Associate of Applied Sciences Degree

  • Four-semester program
  • Agriculture courses include farm and agribusiness management, agricultural marketing, soil sciences, and plant sciences.
  • General courses include economics, accounting, marketing, biology, mathematics, business ethics, English, and speech.
  • Electives such as purchasing, electronics, shop safety, Spanish, law, and ecology.
 

Horticulture - Associate of Applied Sciences Degree

  • Four-semester program
  • A general education courses at HCC includes English, mathematics, arts, humanities, and social sciences
  • Horticulture courses at CCBC Dundalk at in-county tuition rates include botany, interior plant materials, plant propagation and production, basic landscape horticulture business management, landscape design, perennials, and grasses.
     

Technical/Professional Studies - Associate of Applied Sciences Degree

  • Four-semester program
  • One year at HCC
  • One year at the University of Maryland Institute of Applied Agriculture
  • Internships available in Harford County
  • Five areas of concentration (with examples of courses):
    • Agricultural Business Management: Crop production practices, livestock management, analyzing alternative enterprises, power and machinery, personnel management
    • Equine Business Management: Equine health management, agricultural marketing, equine nutrition, pasture management and hay production, equine behavior, soils and fertilizers
    • Turfgrass Management: Pesticide use and safety, solid and fertilizers, land measurements, surveying, drainage and irrigation practices, landscape design and implementation, business law
    • Golf Course Management: Golf course management I and II, agriculture mechanics, turfgrass management, woody ornamentals, diseases of ornamentals, business operations.
    • Landscape Management: Landscape construction, landscape design and implementation, principles of arboriculture, herbaceous annuals and perennials, green house/production management
