Information Assurance and Cybersecurity Certificate

The Internet and the data we send across it provides endless opportunities for cyber criminals. Be a part of the defense system by learning how to prevent and detect security breaches of computer systems and implement computer network security defenses. 

The Information Assurance and Cybersecurity Certificate program prepares students for advancement in the high-demand field of information technology security.  With the increase of viruses and other security breaches, companies need professionals who can protect data and equipment from internal and external security threats.  Students in this program gain hands-on experience with the latest hardware and software and learn to implement appropriate security policies and procedures.  This program is designed for individuals with IT experience who are looking to advance their career in the cybersecurity field.

Upon completion of the certificate program, students will be able to:

  • Apply software patches to operating systems and applications
  • Assess a computer system's security vulnerabilities using appropriate resources
  • Use standard software tools to detect attempted security breaches of computer systems
  • Implement computer network security defenses

Employment/Career Potential

According to the Occupational Handbook, 2016-2017 Edition, overall employment may increase by as much as 9% by 2024 for computer network architects due to the integration of sophisticated technologies and the need to implement security measures.  The information assurance and cybersecurity field is expected to generate many new jobs over the next decade as firms across all industries place a high priority on safeguarding their data and systems.

Cybersecurity Labs in Joppa Hall are used to instruct students in all aspects of cybersecurity and provide hands on practice.

Spring 2018 Cyber Lab Open Student Hours are Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6pm - 9pm in Joppa Hall Room J008.
