“There’s a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to IT,” says Doug Stanley. “Some say to go after certifications; others say you need a degree or you’ll hit a glass ceiling. My advice is to do both. Start with certifications to begin your career and then keep going until you get your degree.”
Doug Stanley always knew he wanted to work in Information Technology and was working for a company related to IT but hadn’t yet decided to pursue an IT career. He visited the Susquehanna Workforce Network to explore his career options.
The path to his current position as Network Technician for University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health began during the summer of 2012 when Doug enrolled in A+ Certification Prep through the Continuing Education & Training Division at HCC. After passing the CompTIA A+ certification exam, he then enrolled in Network + Certification Prep, successfully passing the CompTIA N+ certification exam upon completion of the course.
“I couldn’t be more thankful for the whole experience,” said Doug. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without HCC. Pam Karwowski with the College and Dave Reese, our instructor, not only helped me with my education but also with networking to help me start my career.”
“I was inspired by Dave Reese in the classroom. He had a very laid-back demeanor but his passion for IT kept us engaged in what he was teaching. The content was there to prepare us for the certification exam and he gave pointers on taking the test. Now that I’ve graduated, we still keep in touch.”
About a year after earning his certifications, Doug’s credentials were a perfect match for the Network Technician position with for University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health. “The education I received was aligned with what they were looking for. If I didn’t have the certifications through the HCC program, I would not have been hired for the job,” commented Doug.
Today Doug’s goal is to become a Network Administrator. He is currently enrolled in the Information Assurance and Cybersecurity: Associate of Applied Sciences program with Harford Community College. His A+ and Network+ certifications have enabled Doug to move into the degree courses sooner, bypassing some of the prerequisites. “I look forward to where the program takes me and my family,” said Doug. “I am very grateful to Harford Community College for helping me begin my career and taking me where I want to go.”
