Ashley Barranco

Ashley Barranco’s dream is to become a nurse, and Harford Community College is the stepping-stone that will turn that dream into a reality.

When choosing a career path, Ashley knew in her heart that she wanted to help others. “I would like to know that I have helped people and made a difference in their lives.” She initially enrolled in the Medical Assisting program at Harford. Ashley said, “It is a great program with amazing teachers. They took the time to show the students the basic knowledge you need along with real-life scenarios you may encounter later on in the field. Donna Rowan, Carla Lindhorst, and Paige O’Neill helped me to see that medical assisting was just the beginning of my new-found career in nursing and much more.”

Ashley chose HCC because it was close to home and the flexible class times fit in with her schedule. To help with the financial burden of her education, she applied and became the recipient of both the Lion’s Club and the HCC Library Book Scholarships. “Not having to worry about the cost of tuition and books dramatically reduced my stress level. I would encourage anyone who could use the financial support to apply as there are so many scholarships available.”

Ashley said her mother has been an inspiration to her throughout her life. “My mom has not only been the motivation to pursue an education, but she has been my motivation throughout my entire life. She is the strongest woman I know, and I am proud to say she’s the reason I have been so successful thus far.”

A member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Ashley will earn her A.A.S. Degree in Nursing in 2014. After graduation, she intends to pursue her bachelor’s and eventually attain a master’s degree to become a nurse practitioner.

When asked where she saw herself in 10 years, Ashley replied, “Working my way up the corporate ladder at a major hospital in Baltimore!”
