Message from the Vice President

Dr. Steven Thomas

Harford Community College
Vice President for Academic Affairs

Welcome to the Office of Academic Affairs at Harford Community College. Our division endeavors to transform lives through imagination, compassion and rigor by creating a culture that is fueled by a process of discovery, imagination, and innovation. Whether you are a first generation college student, returning to the classroom after many years, or taking classes for enrichment, we welcome you!

Over the past 60 years as an anchor institution for higher education in Harford County, HCC has been home to students, faculty, and staff from more than 60+ different countries, making our campus a multicultural institution where all personal identities are not only respected, but valued. As an open-access comprehensive community college, we are wholly committed to providing a nurturing space for our students to learn and grow as professionals and citizens whose contributions to society embody the institution’s core values.

There is a learning path for everyone at HCC. As you browse through the website, you will see that we offer more than 80 unique credit program and certificate options. Our students have the option to seamlessly transfer to a four-year institution, receive certification in a program of study, or directly enter the workforce. Program options like Information Assurance and Cyber Security – which has been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education – demonstrate HCC’s commitment to providing Harford County residents with degree options that meet increasing workforce demands.

Furthermore, through local, state-wide, and national professional development, the faculty and staff at HCC are immersed in best practices for student success and will continue to strive to make HCC a leader in innovative instructional practice through on-campus resources such as our Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

The initiatives of the Office of Global Education and Engagement promote global awareness within the campus community, as well as Harford County, by providing opportunities for travel study, partnerships, and events focused on celebrating cultural diversity within our local community and throughout the world. I encourage you to take part in as many of these events as possible throughout this year and to engage with faculty and staff as a means for steeping your education in the richness of their experiences.

In addition, faculty-led events, such as STEM Day and the Mid-Atlantic Undergraduate Psychology Conference (MAUPC), advance student learning by providing opportunities for students to showcase their projects and research in a professional venue. Each year we celebrate the talents of HCC’s Visual, Performing, and Applied Arts faculty with the Winter Doldrums Concert and Art Exhibit, which features a concert performed by music faculty and a fine art and photography exhibit.

In the months since I began my tenure at HCC, I have developed a deep appreciation for the people, businesses, and sense of community that make this county so unique. As an educator, I am fully committed to ensuring that our citizens are provided with educational opportunity. I encourage you to visit our beautiful campus and find out how we can guide you toward meeting your goals.

Sincerely,
Steven, L. Thomas, Ph.D.
Vice President
