Dr. Sherwood was born in Cumberland, Maryland and grew up outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, and graduated with an American Chemical Society certified BS in Chemistry. After his undergraduate degree, Dr. Sherwood worked as a chemist for the Reilly-Whiteman specialty chemical company in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania before going to graduate school at the University of Delaware. He graduated from University of Delaware with a Ph.D. in Chemistry, specializing in biochemistry.
During Dr. Sherwood’s academic career, he has worked at three distinctly different institutions; a mid-sized state university, a small liberal arts college, and a large, multi-campus community college.
The first institution was Arkansas Tech University, where he rose to the rank of Associate Professor and became the Head of the Physical Sciences department, a twelve-member department containing chemists, geologists and physicists. While teaching chemistry and biochemistry, Dr. Sherwood was actively involved in undergraduate research, curriculum redesign, an NSF grant, and development of the University’s strategic plan.
Dr. Sherwood then moved to Westminster College in western Pennsylvania. He again rose to the rank of Associate Professor and became Chair of the Department of Chemistry, a seven-member department. Dr. Sherwood taught organic chemistry and biochemistry and was actively involved in undergraduate research. He wrote several successful grants to fund curriculum redesign and laboratory revitalization. Dr. Sherwood chaired the Pre-Med advisory committee that raised professional school acceptance rate to over ninety percent. He also served as the Director of Science in Motion, a state-funded science outreach program to western Pennsylvania elementary, middle, and high schools.
After twenty-two years as a professor, Dr. Sherwood moved to Oakland Community College as Dean of Mathematics and Sciences and quickly became Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. As the Associate Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sherwood plans and coordinates College initiatives, mentors the academic deans, coordinates faculty professional development, guides the persistence and completion initiative, and fosters shared governance. He works with developmental, transfer, career and technical education, and with traditional and online course delivery. Dr. Sherwood led the successful institutional re-accreditation and serves as the Accreditation Liaison Officer.
In professional service, Dr. Sherwood has been active in the American Chemical Society, serving sections as chair, alternate counselor, and National Chemistry Week coordinator. He has been on four American Chemical Society standardized exam committees. Dr. Sherwood currently serves as a Guided Pathway mentor for the Michigan Center for Student Success and as a Peer Reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission.
