Alumnus Success Story - Michael Neumann

For Release: December 16, 2020

Harford Community College Foundation Board member Michael Neumann took several classes at the College during his junior and senior years of high school. His positive personal experiences made him want to give back to HCC.

Neumann was homeschooled; after completing high school, he attended Gordon College graduating with a degree in Accounting. He said, “I was able to take a semester off during my senior year and get an internship, which later turned into my first job, due to the additional credits I earned from attending HCC.” in Wenham, Massachusetts,

Taking classes at Harford provided him with the opportunity to consider all his options. “HCC allowed me to take classes in areas I thought I wanted to pursue (Computer Science, Business Administration, etc.) and this allowed me to narrow my focus on the degree I ultimately chose. Harford gives you a chance to get all the classroom and experience-related learning of the first years of college out of the way prior to leaving home, and typically at a much lower cost than a four-year school.”

More than a year ago, he became his own boss as the owner of ServiceMaster of Bel Air (SMBA). According to Neumann, “SMBA is a 24-hour emergency service company certified in residential and commercial fire restoration, water damage restoration, mold remediation, oil spill and vandalism cleanup, and all other disasters. ServiceMaster of Bel Air also specializes in pack out services if necessary.” To do his job safely and effectively required earning certifications in several areas (Water, Fire, Mold & Smoke/Odor) from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification, the nonprofit certifying body for the cleaning and restoration industry.

Neumann has a wide variety of previous professional experience, including working for Grant Thornton as an Assurance Associate; Seton Hill University as an Assistant Lacrosse Coach; RKL LLP as a Senior Accountant – Audit; W.R. Grace as Senior Accountant in Fixed Assets & Intercompany Accounting, a Senior Accountant, Joint Venture Accountant, and a JV Controller; and McCormick as North America Accounting Manager, North America Senior Accounting Manager, and Finance Manager for Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Forecasting.

He became a member of the College’s Foundation Board on July 1, 2020. “I joined the board to give back to HCC for all it provided me as well as to become more involved in the Harford County community.” Active in the community, Neumann also serves as a member of the Harford County Chamber of Commerce. He has volunteered for Welcome One Shelter, the only year-round homeless shelter in Harford County; the United Way; and Beachmont Christian Camp in Kingsville.

In his spare time, Neumann enjoys hunting, fishing, soccer, lacrosse, coaching his kids’ sports, hiking, mountain biking, and traveling. Basically, he likes to do anything outdoors and with his family.

His advice to those ready to begin college: “Harford Community College is a wonderful local resource. It affords local students an abundance of educational opportunities, and I feel strongly that its positive impact will be felt and available for years to come.”
