The Harford Civil Rights Project will present a free online community event about the civil rights movement, Sharing Our Stories, on Tuesday, November 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. via a Zoom event. Zoom Meeting ID: 927 4280 6444, Zoom Passcode: 925121
The presentation and conversation will feature the 20th century African American civil rights movement and the work of Harford Community College students on the project. In addition, the event will touch upon common themes of the 20th and 21st century civil rights movements and will include audience participation.
Harford Community College was awarded a $97,118 grant last year from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for "Active Learning and Student Engagement in the Humanities: Understanding the Civil Rights Movement in Harford County, Maryland." The grant is for a three-year project involving student research and oral history, curriculum development, community partnerships, and the development of digital material on Harford County's 20th century civil rights history.
The project will deepen students' understanding of literary works and local and national history and broaden community awareness of the role that Harford County played in the civil rights movement. The project will also establish connections between the 20th and 21st century civil rights movements. The project is led by Dr. James Karmel, Professor of History at Harford Community College, with various English, History and Computer Information Science faculty and student support services staff engaged in various activities.
Created in 1965 as an independent federal agency, the National Endowment for the Humanities supports research and learning in history, literature, philosophy, and other areas of the humanities by funding selected, peer-reviewed proposals from around the nation.
