Harford Community College’s student publication, Owl Magazine, won national honors in the Apple Awards at the College Media Association Convention in New York City on March 15. “Strike! How to Bowl Like a Pro” won third place in the category of Best Magazine Spread, Two-Year School. The spread was written and designed by Brianna Breece and published in the spring 2013 issue.

A member of a bowling league since the age of six, Brianna was inspired to create this piece after being asked for bowling advice from friends. Brianna joined the staff of Owl Magazine in 2011 when she was a Graphic Design and Photography major at HCC. “From the magazine I learned much more than I thought including Adobe InDesign, editorial design, typography, prepress, and leading a team,” she says. “It was a great opportunity to have been part of and has greatly improved my design knowledge.” Currently a Towson University student majoring in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program, Graphic Design, Brianna aspires to a future in web design.

This is the second year in a row that Owl Magazine has received recognition in the Apple Awards. In 2013, the magazine won second place in the categories of Best Magazine Cover, Two-Year School and Best Magazine Spread, Two-Year School.
