Motorcycle Safety Training

The following courses are approved by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA). 

Motorcycle Safety & Licensure (Basic Rider Course)
Alternate Basic Rider Course (Listed below as Intermediate)
Experienced Motorcycle Rider Course

First Gear and Motorcycle Maintenance-Repair are solely sponsored by Harford Community College.

You may not register for a motorcycle safety training class online.  Please call 443-412-2376 or 443-412-2241 for registration information.

Although helmets (DOT certified), gloves, and eyewear are provided, for your best comfort and fit, you should consider bringing these items with you, if you have them, for the range part of the course.

Classes will be held in the rain as long as conditions are safe; the decision will be made on site at the time.  We break for hard rain, lightning, or other unsafe conditions.

Student Stand-by Process at Harford Community College:  If a class is closed because of maximum enrollment, students may choose to participate in the stand-by process. Sometimes a few pre-registered students do not show up for their course and their open spaces are available for stand-by students. To become a stand-by student, report to the class about 30 minutes prior to the scheduled starting time of the course and put your name in for a drawing. If space is available, the stand-bys will be randomly selected. You must pay for and attend the class at that time.

 

Basic Motorcycle Maintenance

This beginner level course is ideal for the new motorcyclist who has never been mechanically inclined. Learn basic maintenance and repair procedures. Spend minimal time in the classroom; the instructor will guide you with hands-on training, performing actual motorcycle repair and maintenance.

Exp Motorcycle Rider Course

This 6-hour course is for licensed motorcyclists who want to improve or refresh their skills. Individuals enrolling in this course must have a valid motorcycle license. The Class 'M' license waiver is not offered as part of this course. Participants in the ERC are expected to use their own motorcycle. Senior adult and disabled retiree tuition waivers apply.

Intermediate Basic Rider

This course is for individuals who have some riding experience and are seeking a Class 'M' license. The prerequisites for this course include the ability to: use the clutch and throttle to get the motorcycle in motion, stop the motorcycle properly in a designated area, execute gradual and tight turns, up and downshift smoothly, and achieve a speed of at least 25 mph. Riders who cannot demonstrate minimum riding proficiency will not be allowed to continue and will need to consider enrolling in the Basic Rider Course. Riders can elect to use a Program training motorcycle, or they may use their personal motorcycle if it is street legal and they transport it to the training site legally. There is no guarantee that an individual enrolling in this course will pass or get his/her license. Please include driver's license number on registration form. Senior adult and disabled retiree tuition waivers apply.

Motorcycle Safety & Licensure (Basic Rider Course)

This course is designed for the true beginning rider who has little or no riding experience. It includes classroom and riding instruction on the basic riding skills and strategies necessary for an individual to begin to practice street riding. You must be able to ride a bicycle to participate in this course. Participants who do not achieve the minimum performance standards will not be allowed to continue in the course. To complete the course, riders must pass a knowledge and skill test administered at the end of the course. Riders who pass will receive a Maryland Motorcycle Safety Program Completion Certificate. There is no guarantee that an individual enrolling in this course will pass or get his/her license. Please include driver's license number on registration form. Approximately one week prior to the start of your class, come in to Edgewood Hall to pick up your Rider Handbook. Senior adult and disabled retiree tuition waivers apply.
