A Look at Medieval Art  
Cathedrals, sculpture, manuscripts, stained glass - these were some of the art forms that flourished during the middle ages. Explore the history and development of medieval art including Early Christian, Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic, from the 4th to the 14th centuries. Black and White Art  
Explore the world of black and white art with various techniques using different pens and inks. Projects will range between creating a still life using an India ink wash and a paint brush to a still life with a ball point pen. Various gray markers will be utilized too. All aspects of black, white and gray will be researched. Senior adult and disabled retiree tuition waivers apply. Email lsturgill@harford.edu for a list of supplies. Supplies: Several different ball point pens, Rapidograph drafting pen set, Quill, bottle of black India ink, black gauche, 2 fine detail sable brushes, various shades of gray markers, very light to black, Straight edge ruler, drafting triangles, draftsman's brush, pad of heavy weight paper 11x17 or larger, gummy eraser. Mechanical pencil with .5 hard lead. 2H pencils with sharpener. Portfolio carrying case (if desired). White gauche. Tracing paper.

Ceramic Raku Workshop  
Learn to do Raku, the ancient Japanese style of firing pottery. Students will work in the HCC ceramics studio and pieces may be hand built and/or wheel thrown. All students will participate in the firing process and leave with their finished work at the end of the firing day. The first Saturday is spent creating work, Friday evening is the glaze night, and the second Saturday is the firing day. The first session meets on Saturday from 12-5 p.m.; the second session meets Friday evening, 5:30-9:30 p.m.; and the last session meets on Saturday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. No experience necessary.

Ceramics Workshop  
Work at the potter's wheel in the HCC ceramics studio. Students will learn the fundamentals of throwing, centering, opening, and pulling the clay by observing demonstrations given by the instructor and putting the demos into practice. Various forms created will then be bisque-fired for the students to glaze. Student should bring a bucket, sponge, and towel. Pottery tools may be purchased at the College Store.

Drawing Comic and Anime Characters  
Explore the world of comic book and anime characters using various techniques with different media. Projects will range between creating a character, developing backgrounds, and storylines for each project. Drawing techiniques for Japanese and American styles will be researched and explored. Characters will be developed, penciled, inked, and then colored completely. Fleshing out entire character universes will be discussed and what it takes to create a complete comicbook, anime story line. Senior adult tuition waivers apply. Supplies: Several different ball point pens, bottle of black India ink, black gauche, 2 fine detail sable brushes, various shades of gray markers - very light to black, straight edge ruler, drafting triangles, draftsman’s brush, pad of heavyweight paper 11x17 or larger, gummy eraser, mechanical pencil with .5 hard lead, 2H pencils with sharpener, white gauche, tracing paper, and portfolio carrying case if desired.

Fundamentals of Drawing  
Appropriate for the beginner or as a refresher for the out-of-practice artist, this class explores the many techniques used to see correctly. A series of simple exercises will assist in achieving accurate proportions, shapes, textures, and values within a composition, culminating in an individual project of the student's choice.

Investigate painting with acrylic or oil paint. Discuss and practice color theory, stylistic choices, and various application techniques while working from a group still life. Open Studio with Rita Cooper  
Do you need designated painting time to work on your projects? Take advantage of this open studio session. This is not for the first time student. Instruction will be limited and individualized. Students should bring their supplies and project each week and artist Rita Cooper will be available to help with those trouble spots and to offer encouragement and suggestions as you work.

Pre-Raphaelites  
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was a group of English artists and poets including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, who sought to raise the stature of art and the artist in an increasingly mechanized society. They looked to the period before Raphael and the Renaissance as their ideal, and combined this style with a love of literature and history, to profoundly influence the Victorian era. Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), Michelangelo Buonarroti, and Leonardo da Vinci are the three artists most people think of when they think Renaissance Art. This class will explore their works in paint, sculpture, drawing and architecture; show how they advanced the use of color, perspective and space in painting; and space and movement in sculpture and architecture.
