What happens when children’s books and young adult novels make the leap from the page to the big screen? Do these stories “grow up” and become more suitable for adults than children? This class will look at three fascinating texts: Alice in Wonderland, Big Fish, and The Hunger Games alongside their cinematic counterparts to explore the differences generated by screenwriting, special effects, and cinematic reinterpretation. We will also discuss these novels in relation to authorial intent and artistic integrity, asking whether movies bring these original stories to life or give them entirely new lives of their own. Senior adult and disabled retiree tuition waivers apply. Email lsturgill@harford.edu for a reading list to be completed prior to class.
