Motorcycle Safety
| Advanced Rider Course |
This course is the civilian version of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's military sport bike course, but it can be taken on any stock street legal motorcycle. It is a course designed for experienced riders. For the purposes of this course, an experienced rider is one who has the basic skills and is a current rider with a motorcycle license. The Advanced Rider Course is designed to compliment and build on the skills learned and practiced in other rider courses. Special emphasis is given to self-assessment, risk management, rider behavior, riding strategies, and overall skills development, particularly in braking, cornering, and swerving techniques.
Students use their own bikes and get feedback from very experienced instructors. A motorcycle license is required. Recent real time mileage on a personal motorcycle is a must, and students must be able to demonstrate good basic skills to be allowed to continue. The class covers 3 hours of classroom instruction, a break for lunch, and 5 hours on the range. License, registration, and insurance will be checked before class. Proper attire includes DOT certified helmet, protective eyewear, full-fingered gloves, long pants, long-sleeved shirt or jacket, and sturdy over-the-ankle boots. Parental or guardian approval, in writing, is required for participants under age 18.
Personal motorcycles must be street legal, in good operating condition, and pass a routine pre-ride check given as a part of the course.
Because of the high level of traction required, the riding activities will NOT be conducted if the riding surface is wet. The classroom activities will be conducted and the riding portion rescheduled for another time.
During the riding activities, each rider will be evaluated by the instructors on their ability to accomplish the riding objectives. Riders who cannot demonstrate minimum riding proficiency will not be allowed to continue or should consider enrolling in the Basic Rider Course 2 (BRC2). Riders who are not allowed to continue will not be eligible for a refund and may have to pay an additional fee to be enrolled in the BRC2.
To complete the course riders must pass a 20-question knowledge test administered at the end of the classroom activities. Riders must also meet the objectives of the riding activities. Riders completing the course will receive a Maryland Motorcycle Safety Program Completion Card. Senior adult and disabled retiree tuition waivers apply.

| Alternate Rider Course |
This course is for individuals who have some riding experience and are seeking a Class "M" license. The prerequisites for this course include the ability to use the clutch and throttle to get the motorcycle in motion, stop the motorcycle properly in a designated area, execute gradual and tight turns, up and downshift smoothly, and achieve a speed of at least 25 mph. Riders who cannot demonstrate minimum riding proficiency will not be allowed to continue and will need to consider enrolling in the Basic Rider Course. Riders can elect to use a program training motorcycle, or they may use their personal motorcycle if it is street legal and they transport it to the training site legally. There is no guarantee that an individual enrolling in this course will pass or get his/her license. Please include driver's license number on registration form. Senior adult and disabled retiree tuition waivers apply.

| Basic Rider Course |
This course is designed for the beginning rider who has little or no riding experience. It includes classroom and riding instruction on the basic riding skills and strategies necessary for an individual to begin to practice street riding. You must be able to ride a bicycle to participate in this course. Participants who do not achieve the minimum performance standards will not be allowed to continue in the course. To complete the course, riders must pass a knowledge and skill test administered at the end of the course. Riders who pass will receive a Maryland Motorcycle Safety Program Completion Certificate. There is no guarantee that an individual enrolling in this course will pass or get his/her license. Please include driver's license number on registration form. Approximately one week prior to the start of your class, come in to Edgewood Hall to pick up your Rider Handbook. Please note that the MVA has a "zero tolerance policy" for lateness to any class.
