Garden Mosaics
Learn to make a mosaic stone. You will assemble a form, cut glass, set the glass in a form and pour concrete into the form. Stone can be used as a stepping stone for the garden. Gorgeous Gourd Crafts
Today artists are transforming gourds into works of art, and you can, too! Projects include a variety of items that change with the seasons. Your class may carve a unique bowl, or create a beautiful birdfeeder, or focus on the holiday of the season. The options are as broad as the instructor's imagination. Whatever the project, you will be amazed by what you create. $40 payable to the instructor on the first night of class for supplies. Students will complete 4 projects.

Gourd Festival: Fish Tales
Have fun converting a gourd into a fish trying to catch his tail. After cutting out the fish, we will use Adirondack inks for coloring the fish and water. Instructor will provide a clean gourd ready to cut and color. Supplies needed: mini jigsaw; dust mask; rotary tool (optional).

Turn a martin gourd into a 3-D puzzle. After cutting and cleaning, we will add wooden mushroom plugs and heishi inlays. Relief carve a sea turtle in combination with a stippled background. Learn to trace a design, carve the outline, remove the gourd shell, stipple the surface, and drill a filigree pattern in the prepared surface to simulate air bubbles. Gourd Festival: Asian Bowl with Washi Paper Collage
Create an Asian bowl with a collage of washi paper and various embellishment such as satin cord, beads, and Asian oins. Choose from a variety of paper colors and patterns. Students should bring dremel type drill with a medium round bit, dust mask, small, sharp, scissors, and a utility knife.

Gourd Festival: Celtic Knotwork
Design and burn the perfect Celtic Knotwork. Be prepared to draw - no tracing patterns provided. Supplies needed: pyrography (wood burning) tool, a variable temperature tool with pens that can do lines and shading, medium-sized clean gourd that can be cut into a bowl or left whole. Please note: Hobby-type burners will not give good results and are not recommended for this class.

Gourd Festival: Leather Tool Look
Burn a faux leather design on the gourd with wood burning pens and stain the gourd. The oak leaf cluster design will be applied to the student's choice of gourd. A cut cannon ball gourd will be furnished, but the design can be placed on any type of gourd and expanded to suit the gourd artist. Supplies needed: adjstable wood burner; small ball tip pen; a skew tip pen; and dust mask.

Learn pyrography skills to burn a realistic-looking chickadee on a gourd. Supplies needed: pyrography (wood burning) tools; variable temperature unit with multiple pen tips (for lines and shading); a small to medium size kettle/martin house shapred uncut gourd. Create the look of 3 dimensions by relief carving into a thick gourd to create a beautiful six point stag head. Learn how to use a rotary tool to do relief carving that can be applied to any future project. If time allows, we will paint the finished deer. Gourd Festival: Making a Rainstick
The rainstick is believed to have been invented in Chile or Peru and was played in the belief it could bring rainstorms. Rainsticks, usually made from cactus, have pebbles or other small objects placed inside. These pebbles/objects sound like falling water when the rainstick is rotated back and forth. Our rainstick will be made from a gourd. The instructor has collected a variety of etra-long penguins, milk bottles, and clubs for this class. Workshop covers only the construction of the rainstick. Gourd Festival: Random Weave Basket
Learn to loosen up with random weave, a technique that allows for a structured or very freeform basket or sculpture. Your weaving stype and tastes will determine the shaping and style. Work with natural and various colors of round reed in several sizes. As a finishing accent, leather lacing, nubby yarn, and seagrass will be provided. Full color pattern included. Supplies needed: sharp, strong scissors; small awl (flat or round-tipped), small water container; and old towel.

Gourd Festival: Thunder (Spring) Drum
A thunder drum or spring drum is a drum that has a spring attached to the drum head that when shaken, creates a sound resembling a thunderstorm. You will use gourds that have been cut and cleaned to be able to attache the drum head and spring. Using your imagination and stencils provided, you will cut shapes out of the gourd that act as the the resonator for the drum head. After cutting your design, dye and seal the gourd before attaching the synthetic drum head and spring. Supplies needed: mini jig saw and transformer; dust masks.

Gourd Festival: Weaving a Rainstick
Learn different weaving techniques as you weave (wrap) the outside of your rainstick that was made in an earlier workshop. Weaving consists of rod wale (triple twinning) with three different color reeds. Add rows of glass crow beads to your spike and add darts or arrows. You will twin a few inches, switch to twilling with three weavers and three spokes, then return to twinning. Add jumps rings during weaving to add strings of beads, charms or natural embellishments. If you are interested in weaving, but did not sign up for the session on making a rainstick, email snonn@harford.edu prior to the festival.

Gourd Group
This creative evening allows those interested in gourd crafts to share ideas and tips to get the most from their gourds. It is open to anyone who has previously taken a gourd class. Italian Mosaics
Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. Small pieces, normally roughly cubic, of stone or glass of different colors, known as tesserae, are used to create a pattern or picture. Learn this unique art form as you create your own mosaic. Weaving Gourds
Using a gourd as a form, learn different ways to weave around the gourd surface. Techniques include weaving, twining, three-rod wale, and Suzi’s favorite "hairy weaving." We will also create undulating hills and valleys to add interest to the gourd basket. The gourd basket will be embellished with beads and natural materials.
