Green Buildings

The word "green" is often heard when describing buildings that have been designed and constructed based on sustainability principles. These principles seek to reduce or eliminate the use of fossil fuels, both in the construction of the building and in its operation, by increasing energy efficiency, using locally supplied materials where possible, and by employing renewable energy resources. Additional sustainability principles include:

  • Creating healthy environments for the building occupants by improving lighting and ventilation and minimizing or eliminating the use of toxic materials.
  • Eliminating waste by recycling and utilizing materials that are durable and renewable.
  • Supporting restoration of the natural environment by minimizing the building footprint, using sustainable landscaping techniques, and safeguarding water by employing healthy storm water management techniques and using water conservation programs.
