Student Intervention and Prevention
443-412-2132
While interacting with students at the College,
employees and students may be confronted with students who may be displaying
concerning or threatening behavior. As members of the campus community, we all have a
shared ethical responsibility to report concerning behaviors we experience
or observe. Concerning behaviors include emotional distress, unusual
behavior, abuse of alcohol or illicit drugs, thoughts of suicide or
homicide, disturbing written material, and other troubling behaviors.
Concerning behaviors might be observed in a number of settings, such as, in
the classroom, at a service location or office, or during participation in
an extracurricular activity. By reporting behaviors that are concerning,
the Student Intervention and Prevention (SIP) Team will be able to reach out
to students to intervene, provide support, and connect them with resources
that can assist them before there is a crisis.
Goals of the SIP Team
- Act in a proactive manner to assist students
- Provide consultation and support to faculty and staff
- Connect students with needed campus and community resources
- Recommend interventions and/or sanctions
- Assess the situation to determine level of threat to self or others
The SIP team does not replace faculty classroom management, disciplinary
processes of the College, College Public Safety responses to incidents, or
licensed psychological services.
Additionally, the SIP teams works within all current College policies and
follows threat assessment protocols.
SIP Team Membership
SIP Team members are hand-picked campus employees who through their
professional skill set are capable of providing assistance to students. Membership is as follows:
- Associate Vice President for Student Development
- Chief of Public Safety
- Coordinator for Disability and Student Intervention Services
- Director for Advising, Career, and Transfer Services
- Student Development Specialists
- Additional members from the campus and community are included as
necessary
What to Report
Referrals to the SIP Team can be made by faculty, staff, another student,
or a student may self identify. In general, any behavior that disrupts or interferes with the normal
operations of the College, causes concern for a student's well-being or the
well-being of others
should be reported. All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to
use the
Report Form for Concerning Behavior.
This form allows the campus community to communicate with the SIP Team and
make the SIP Team aware of any concerns or suspicions you may have about a
particular individual's behavior. We recommend that you report any
threats and any other behavior you find troubling or upsetting.
There is no penalty for reporting. In fact, the SIP Team wants to
hear about behavior that causes anyone some worry or concern.
Call 911 and the Department of Public Safety, 443-412-2272, if the physical safety of a student,
yourself, or others is of immediate concern.
