Campus Policy on
Tobacco Use

HCC is a TOBACCO FREE campus.

Tobacco use is prohibited in all areas of the campus, including parking lots and personal vehicles.

$50 Fine may be imposed for non-compliance.

Policy Approved by BOT – April 10, 2007

Did you know that 96% of HCC students prefer to date a non-smoker?

(Based on a Spring 2008 survey)

It is the policy of Harford Community College that the use of any type of tobacco product is prohibited in all buildings and areas of the campus and off-campus sites supervised by the college.  This includes parking lots and personal vehicles.

Procedure

  • The above policy became effective July 1, 2007.
  • This policy shall be communicated to all students and employees through as wide a variety of communication as available.
  • All newly hired employees shall receive an explanation of this policy during their orientation.
  • Signs shall be posted in common areas such as campus entrances, building entrances, lobbies, Globe Café, dining rooms, athletic fields, and other outdoor facilities as practical.
  • Compliance with and enforcement of the tobacco use restrictions will rely on the social responsibility of all people at the College. Employees who observe others violating the tobacco use restrictions are expected to inform the violator of the policy and/or contact Campus Security.
  • Education and treatment are the preferred intervention for violators, but violators may also be subject to a fine or disciplinary action.

Wellness Assistance

The College works with the Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, Harford County Health Department and the Harford County Cancer and Tobacco Community Coalition to assist smokers in quitting and to discourage others from starting through smoking cessation classes and health and wellness programs and publications. Contact the College Life Office at 443-412-2140 for more information on wellness assistance.
