Literacy Education Volunteer Program

The Literacy Education Department offers volunteer opportunities in the classroom instructional program and the one-on-one literacy tutoring program.

Classroom Volunteers

Classroom volunteers work in Adult Basic Education (ABE) or in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes which are held at locations throughout Harford County. Classes meet two evenings or mornings a week for 2 1/2 hours per session. Day classes meet in the Aberdeen and Edgewood areas. Volunteers may choose to serve one or two class sessions per week. No specialized training is necessary, but new volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend an orientation session which will be held prior to the start of the semester.

One-on-one Tutors

One-on-one tutors are required to attend a ten-hour training workshop to become certified to tutor an adult beginning reader in reading and writing skills.  Tutoring sessions are scheduled at locations and times convenient for the tutor and student. Tutors and students usually meet once or twice a week for 1 to 2 hours per session.  The College supplies books and materials for use by the tutors and students.

For more information about these volunteer opportunities and to register for the orientation or training workshop, call Debbie at 410-836-4115 or email her at dgordon@harford.edu.
