What is Linux+ Certification?

CompTia says, Linux+ is a vendor-neutral certification, generic across distributions, that validates the knowledge of individuals with a minimum of six to 12 months of practical Linux experience. Professionals holding the CompTIA Linux+ credential can explain fundamental management of Linux systems from the command line, demonstrate knowledge of user administration, understand file permissions, software configurations, and management of Linux-based clients, server systems and security.  When you receive your certification through Linux+ preparatory courses at Harford Community College, you’ll have obtained a skill level and depth of knowledge to successfully pass your exam and to confidently perform in a business environment.

Why should I get certified?

It helps students get a foot in the door with either a prospective employer or client. It lets others know your achievement level, and many employers may use certification as either a condition for employment or reward certifications earned with job advancement or promotions. It can also provide a path to a variety of fulfilling and challenging Linux-related careers, as well as provide foundational knowledge for additional certifications.

Topics include the basics of Linux technology, maintenance of a Linux system, system services, syntax and variables, editing commands, web, database and networking. Students will do hands-on exercises, and take quizzes and sample tests to prepare for the exam.

Linux+ Exam Requirements and Certificate

The Linux+ exams are written by CompTIA (Computer Technology Industry Association).  Certification is awarded for successful completion of the examination, and not for completion of preparation courses. There are no further Linux+ education requirements or exams once the student has become certified. For more information on scheduling exams, visit www.2test.com.

What are the Prerequisites?

Linux+ recommends an A+ or Network+ certification. Students interested in enrolling in this program should attend Computer Counseling Night held at the beginning of the Fall semester. Counseling Night is FREE to the public and instructors will be available to answer questions.

I’m still not sure the computer field is for me. What should I do?

Attend Computer Counseling night held at the beginning of the Fall Semester on the Harford Community College Campus. It’s free to the public. Computer training instructors will be there to speak with you and help select the programs appropriate for you.
