Harford Community College offers the Certification Program in Histotechnology
through the Department of Continuing Education & Training.
It is designed for those who are currently employed in a
laboratory setting and seeking an opportunity for
professional development in the field of histotechnology.
Using online instruction, the program provides students a self-paced course
to which they have access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Students
communicate with the instructor via email, telephone and
regular mail.
In addition to coursework, students will
spend significant time performing laboratory exercises.
These exercises are performed in a laboratory where
the student is employed. The clinical experience complements
the online course material. Laboratory exercises are mailed
to the instructor for grading and feedback. Students are expected
to complete the course in 10 months.
Prerequisites
The student must be at least 18 years of
age or older and a high school graduate (or
equivalent) and must have successfully completed high school
or college level courses in biology, chemistry, and math
prior to entry into the program. Students need to be
currently employed in a pathology laboratory and
secure a certified educational mentor (HT or HTL) for the laboratory
coursework. The mentor will help clarify questions and keep
the student focused while progressing through the program.
Policies
Enrollment is rolling. Students can enroll and start
the program anytime. Once registration and payment are
received, a password and directions on how to access the
course will be sent to the students.
-
Quizzes and tests will be used throughout the course
to measure comprehension and student progress. A number
grade will be assigned based on 100 possible points. A =
90 –100; B = 80 – 89; C = 70 – 79; D = 60 – 69; F =
below 60.
-
Laboratory projects will be graded as pass/fail.
Projects that are failed have to be made up.
-
A minimum grade of 70% must be obtained to pass the
course. Additionally, all laboratory projects must be
completed satisfactorily.
The refund and withdrawal policy for the Harford
Community College Histology Technician Certification
Program is as follows: If a student drops the course
prior to starting the program, a full refund will be
given. Once a student starts the program, a 50% refund
will be given prior to the completion of the first two
lessons or until the student reaches one month into the
program or course. After that, no refunds will be given.
No official withdrawal is required except when a refund
is due. If students need to take a break from their
training, they must contact their instructor and
collectively develop a plan for when and how to reenter
the program. Students will not normally be allowed back
into the program if they have stopped progressing in the
course and have not previously discussed the stoppage
with their instructor.
-
Although self-paced, students are expected to make
reasonable and continued progression in the course.
Target dates and project deadlines will be set by both
the instructor and the student. If a student lags too
far behind a reasonable pace, the instructor is expected
to notify the student and work with the student to
correct the slow progression. However, it is ultimately
the student’s responsibility to complete the assignments
and progress in the program.
