Dental Assistant Expanded Functions

Attention Dental Assistants! Enhance your skills and knowledge by completing this training and becoming certified as a Maryland Dental Assistant Qualified in General Duties.

Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to sit for the Maryland General Dental Assisting Expanded Functions exam and apply to the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners for state recognition.

Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED
  • Presently employed as a dental assistant and employer willing to supervise clinical experience*
  • At least 6 months experience working as a dental assistant
  • Knowledge of basic oral anatomy and physiology; basic infection control; basic dental terminology
  • Radiation certification advised, but not required

*Signed letter of recommendation from employer, typed on facility letterhead, indicating current employment, verifying a minimum of 6-months of compensated experience as a dental assistant, and willingness to supervise clinical experience. An affiliation agreement will be needed between the college and dental facility.
