Approximately 1,500 people from across the Mid-Atlantic region turned out to attend Harford Community
College’s Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Expo on April 13 and 14. Forty vendors participated in the
2-day event. Harford Community College was the ideal setting for an expo of green products as the
campus is a showcase of sustainability – boasting green roofs, renewable energy, and several buildings
that incorporate LEED design standards. This event is just one way for the College to inform the public
about the importance of protecting the environment.
Highlights of the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Expo included showcasing such products and technology as
photovoltaic panels, solar hot water and thermal systems, wind power systems, hydrogen and fuel cell technology,
energy efficient construction, and hybrid vehicles. There were also lectures, workshops and displays on passive
solar construction, straw bale construction, green building construction and operation, water conservation and
management, biodiesel, green roofs, and causes and effects of global climate change. An Inconvenient Truth,
Too Hot Not to Handle, and Happy Feet were shown. In addition, there were children’s activities, food vendors,
and live music on Saturday.
The event was successful in getting out the message of sustainability to members of the community.
